This time, I chose "Install Ubuntu." The machine thought about it for a while, then this popped up:
I changed the boot order to try the DVD drive first, and simply let it boot. However, once they stopped, the computer powered down once more as before. The drive clanked away for about thirty seconds, and the purple screen with the marching dots appeared. The 18.04 disk had an entry for "check disk for errors." None were found, so I tried the topmost item: "Run Ubuntu (without installing). It behaves the same way as the 20.04 disk. Last edited by WB0HYQ 1 Week Ago at 04:43 AM. I had to do that before the DVD even became available in the boot menu. Linux Live runs just fine there, so it has to be the computer itself blocking the Linux boot. I've also used it on one of my laptops to see if it actually bootable. Now, when I boot normally into Windows 10, I can view every directory on the DVD. NOTE: Legacy boot mode is not supported on this platform. I'm a bit worried the BIOS may be at fault here as when I'm in it, the first paragraph across the top states: "UEFI Only." Right under that is this: I have a backlit keyboard, and that goes dead as well so I know the power is gone. I've finally managed to get the DVD drive in the F12 boot menu, but when I click on it, the DVD drive fires up, I get the Grub menu, but every time I select "Ubuntu," the DVD drive clatters a bit, then the whole computer powers off, leaving just the power light in the switch on. I have provided links to three photos, one is a diagnostic screen that shows my hard drive is broken, another is the BIOS screen, and the final one is the F12 screen.Just purchased a Dell Inspiron (3891) and am attempting to install Ubuntu 20.04 on it. I have also tried the screen that pops up when I press F12 as I boot up the system, but am still unable to do so. I was able to change the boot order on another Windows 7 system I had, but for some reason I am unable to do so on the Dell Inspiron 15R SE. I have tried changing the boot order in the BIOS (the screen that pops up when I press F2 when I boot up the system), but am unable to do so. I know that it is not a problem with the USB, as I am able to boot from the USB on another Windows 7 system. I have tried booting from this USB but am unable to do so. I have created a bootable USB with Linux Ubuntu. It is going to be repaired soon, but I would like to retrieve the data from the hard drive. I have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE laptop, running Windows 8, with a broken hard drive.
